Hand Beaded Glacial Rocks
2020
7 palm-sized, hand beaded, glacier rocks with mixed media
Variable dimensions
For the past 30 years, I’ve collected the roundest and smoothest glacier rocks that have crossed my numerous walks around my subarctic neighbourhood. I think of the antiquity of glacier time and how mountains were eventually eroded to these palm-sized marvels of wonder. Different rocks, different chemical makeups, but all eventually oozing and forced to cool, far from the magma-heated womb of Mother Earth. They offer a comforting coolness and heft cupped within your hand.
These mountain glacier rock eggs could symbolise that womb heat exuding and cooling, warming the subarctic air.
Or, they could be hurtling asteroids, minute meteor pieces blazing their chemical and mineral burns, sparkling in the darkness of our clear Northern night skies, awakening mysterious wonder within.
Yet, my Mind returns to my Ancestors, the ones who had to carry minute embers in small bags of sand next to their hearts. When camp was set and the qulliq filled with oil, this precious ember was once set alight. Home, safely, once again.
Family retelling tales, passing on the Seeds of Knowledge and keeping the night at bay.
