Meditating within the Northern Lights 2
2005
Black stroud, smoke tanned caribou hide, various materials
38.5 x 28 inches

Imagine the magnification of the Hubble Space Telescope, and times that by 10,000, as you gaze upon a portioned slice of the Northern Lights, its image reflected back.

I re-created this imagined view on lush black wool using beads and multiple, minute hand stitches. All the beads were meticulously chosen for their particular colour, shape, size, or use. Some signify large, gas-filled ice chunks, others reflective ice crystals or black holes, all interspersed with peace signs, keys, locks, and carved birds. These materials evoke subconscious feelings of the depths and mysteries revealed.
