A Present for Mother's 70th Birthday
2004
Black wool stroud, smoke tanned caribou hide, various materials
28.5 x 26.5 inches
For her 70th birthday, my Mum, Mary Adams, asked me for a hand-sewn, hand-beaded wall hanging. She also wanted me to use the actual shapes of ulus in our family that had been used extensively through generations.
She asked for two little girls flying ulu kites, symbolizing family, play, and passing on knowledge from one generation to the next.
I used my finest smoke tanned caribou to portray the ingrained fat, the usage and years on each individual ulu blade and handle.
Golden threads stitch one generation to the next and the last.
I did my finest stitches and beadwork in her honour for her birthday.
Happy Birthday again Mother.
Love,
Daughter.
